Oil Seals
Our premium product is the PTFE LINED SEAL (PLS) with which we have been associated for >23 years in various UK companies, taking the basic seal technology & developing both the product design concepts & manufacturing processes to suit the needs of Motor Sport customers.
The PLS is a composite Oil Seal of conventional style having a PTFE (TeflonTM) facing bonded onto the dynamic seal lip & offering >50% reduction in friction compared to most other oil seal types.
It is particularly suited to higher speed applications such as Crankshaft Seals or any application where higher efficiency is required. The PLS run much cooler than most other seals, creates less wear of the shaft & less heat degradation of the lubricants.
The PLS technology can be extended to be used in most seal applications, rotary & reciprocating, including Engines, Transmissions, & Chassis seals & is particularly suited to use with soft shaft materials.
Our second tier product is our HD SEAL which is a premium performance rubber lip seal having a highly efficient Bi-Directional Hydrodynamic feature. We have an association with this product going back over 30 years & know this to be arguably one of the best Bi-Directional Hydrodynamic Oil Seal technologies available. With dynamic friction reduction upto 25%, & cooler running, the HD Seal is well suited to Engine & Transmission applications & also to the plunging shaft dynamics found on drive shaft applications.
Grease Seals
Variants of both the PLS & HD Seals can be used beneficially in Grease control / Dirt exclusion modes adjacent to Taper roller, Angular contact, & DGB bearings.
Designs & materials are adjusted according to the application environment & shaft materials being used.
Another enhancement of the seal will be found in the reduction of seal sections to give space, weight & performance gains to the customer. Originated in Formula 1 Uprights in the early 1990’s, these ULTRA-NARROW SEALS not only improved the exclusion of carbon dust & water, & gave much reduced friction, but also at the time contributed to a 1.5 Kg reduction in the un-sprung weight.
A further extension of these technologies is their use in INTEGRALLY-SEALED BEARINGS where a “racing” approach to the seal design & materials ensures minimal friction & optimum racing performance.
These “racing” seals frequently operate with friction reductions upto 90% & “Zero-Friction” options are possible.
Water Pump Seals
For those engines which require MECHANICAL FACE SEALS we offer access to a range of individual Seals & Counter-faces, Cassette Seals & Fully-Unitised Seals. These are new generation products having the latest materials & technology as used in current production engines.
For older engines we can replace obsolete seals & upgrade the installation using the modern seals with simple adaptors to adjust from Imperial to Metric dimensions.
Where the customer is unable to use the Face Seals due to the combination of speed & pressure which are required, then PLS technology may be used. The introduction of PLS technology into a BTCC water pump in the mid 1990’s offered a significant reduction in the space envelope required (typically 18 – 20mm down to 8.0mm) & was an effective solution to previous seal problems & as a replacement for other PTFE Lip Seals.
In order to achieve the best solutions in the water pumps it is essential that care is taken to protect the seals from the scourging effects of turbulence & vortices at the root of the impellor.
Valve Stem Seals
A comprehensive range of seal sizes & styles is available to suit most engine requirements. The modern products feature the latest FKM materials & latest design features.
The effects of scavenging the crankcase to achieve high levels of vacuum can affect the working of the Valve Stem Seals. Similarly, high levels of boost pressure from Superchargers or Turbchargers can also affect the VSS.
PLS technology was introduced into VSS for higher performance engines many years ago particularly to overcome the effects of very high Exhaust valve stem temperatures. Secondary benefits of the PLS technology was that the VSS were de-sensitised to the affects of vacuum & boost pressures & also overcame heat-set problems with the standard PTFE type VSS.
Hydraulic & Pneumatic Seals
PLS technology sits alongside more conventional machined PTFE / Rubber Seal designs to offer a comprehensive range of seals to meet the most demanding applications in Gearbox control Hydraulics systems, Pneumatic applications, etc. Well-developed PTFE / Rubber products ensure the reliability in performance, while the low lip forces in the PLS versions offer the lowest levels of stiction.
For Shock Absorber applications both All-Rubber, Rubber-Metal lip seals, & PTFE/Rubber seals types are available to suit standard Shock Absorber applications through to Gas Struts.
Rubber seals incorporate low friction material developments for & the PTFE / Rubber variants include a range of seal designs highly suitable to the small-amplitude, high frequency rod movements seen in many race cars.
New generation materials include FKM Nano-PTFE technology which ensure much higher loadings of PTFE in the rubber matrix for lowest friction values.
CVJ Seals & Boots
Our involvement in Formula 1 during the early-mid 1990’s lead us to evolve new concepts for CVJ / Trilobe Joints, moving from conventional corrugated-style Boots to more compact “radial” designs.
This was greatly assisted by moving the Trilobe Joints inboard of the transmission housing & consequent need for larger diameter Differential Shaft Seals.
Now widely adopted in many levels of Motor Sports around the world the design variants are numerous………….. but all give help to the Aerodynamicists.
Today, GST can offer bespoke designs to suit all customer application requirements.
Precision Mouldings
As an additional service to our customers we offer the supply of Precision Mouldings.
These are mostly made to customer drawings, though in some cases we can assist with bespoke designs to meet the customer requirements.
In many cases we are able to offer these products with manufacturing tolerances much tighter than the norm.
